The right start in
education for life.
ACADEMICS > academic program

The school is a charter member of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which has developed units of study specifically designed for international schools. This curriculum is based on a clear philosophy of international education in a time of rapid global change, and also reflects recent developments in our understanding of how the brain works and how children learn.

The school year, extending from early September to the end of June, is divided into three terms with four-week vacation periods at Christmas and again during the early spring. Classes meet on Monday to Friday from 08.30 to 15.45. The school is divided into six classes of 10 to 15 students. The small class size allows the teachers to individualize programs and differentiate instruction. Considerable emphasis is placed on the development of study and research skills as well as on project work. Special instruction in English is offered for students who are not native speakers, and tutorial assistance in any subject can be arranged. A state-of-the-art computer network allow all students in grades 4-8 to work on individual lap top computers and all classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. A well-stocked library and up-to-date teaching materials all serve to enrich the academic program.

Included in the curriculum are the following subjects: English (reading / literature, writing, spelling, grammar, handwriting, listening and speaking), mathematics, social studies (history, geography, social sciences), science and French. All pupils also study art, music, drama, information technology and physical education on a regular basis.

Evaluation is an important part of the educational process at the John F. Kennedy International School. Teachers have the responsibility of carefully monitoring student progress through diligent observation, frequent testing and the use of standardized examinations such as the Educational Records Bureau Comprehensive Test Program. A detailed anecdotal progress report is sent to parents three times per year.
